Eating out with no numbers? Log an estimate

A restaurant meal comes with no weight, so every number for it is an estimate. Describe the plate: your AI works out grams and calories, and Remembite saves them and checks the foods it can match to USDA data. Your AI does the math. Remembite keeps the record.

Reference range 554-823 kcal, then dinner saved at 719 kcal
Illustration, sample data A reference range of 554 to 823 kcal for the assumed portions, then your AI's 719 kcal, saved. Real Remembite results.

No menu numbers, no scale

I ask it to list the contents of the plate, then I correct any assumptions.

The estimate is gone when the chat ends, and nothing checks it.

A pizza dinner, step by step

  1. Say what you see: "Dinner at a pizza place: two slices of pepperoni pizza and a small Caesar salad. No menu numbers."
  2. Your AI asks Remembite for reference values: pizza 176 g (420 to 573 kcal), salad 250 g (82 to 303 kcal).
  3. Your AI logs its own figures: 214 g of pizza at 603 kcal and 150 g of salad at 116 kcal. Per 100 g the pizza matches the reference (282 kcal).
  4. Remembite saves the dinner at 719 kcal. In the app both rows read "Checked against USDA". A food with no close reference would read "AI estimate".

If a matched food looks far off, nothing is saved and a question goes back to you.

Card asks about 640 kcal of granola, then saved at 252 kcal

Why log it as an estimate?

Menu numbers are estimates too. The FDA requires calorie counts only for chains with 20 or more locations (page current as of 12/13/2023), so a restaurant outside that rule may show none. In a 2010 lab study of 269 restaurant items, 50 (19%) measured at least 100 kcal per portion above the stated figure (Urban et al., JAMA, 2011, PMID 21771989).

What Remembite does not do

  • It has no restaurant menus, brand numbers, photo input or barcode scanning. The reference is generic USDA data. A portion you cannot see is a guess.

Questions

Should I add 20% to restaurant meals?

One Hacker News commenter does (January 2025). Remembite recommends no number; it records the one you choose.

Eating out in another time zone?
